My favorite topic comes from a long-standing perplexed area in my brain, which wants to know if it is possible for a bona fide Christian to love a gay person. We bona fides endure an angry press. The world believes we are homophobes.
But how can it be that we fear and/or hate any class of people when God has commanded us to mark our lives with a love for all people so intense that others notice it just watching us speak and act?
This blog is about discovering stories of Christians who have truly loved gay people.
We have to begin by defining terms. By "God" I mean the Person of the Old and New Testament Bible whose Word in that book is true. I do not mean a made-up field of squish who affirms, in the name of love, whatever path to truth and pleasure a person chooses.
For "gay" I mean anyone whose primary sexual attraction is to someone of his/her own gender.
And by "love" I mean two of the four meanings in Greek that C.S. Lewis talks about in "The Four Loves." I do not mean "storge" love, which is love of the familiar, including places, objects, pets, and people. I do not mean "eros" love, because that would be inappropriate in a discussion of Christians loving gay people.
I'm looking for stories about friendship love ("philea") and "agape" love, which is the love God has for us, a love that seeks the best interests of the beloved and isn't bestowed because of the beloved's lovableness, but rather because of the lover's nature.
Over the years, I've heard hundreds of stories of heterosexual Christians loving gays, and I know thousands and thousands of such stories abound. If you have such a story, please let me know. You can email me at: spiersonevans@gmail.com
